We are a population who mainly live from the extraction of natural resources from the mangrove and recently from the tourism based on those natural resources.

Apart from tourism, we make a living from fishing, collection of mangrove crabs, shells, oysters and mussels.

Some arts of fishing used in Puerto El Morro

  1. Enmalle or lisero. - is a large net formed by a main line with a float and a secondary line with a weight, where the fish tries to go through and gets trapped by its gills, jaw and fins. There are three types of enmalle: shallow, middle and deep water.
  2. Trasmallo. - is a variation of enmalle with the difference that it has 2 or 3 pieces of net in different sizes. The net is higher so it forms a cone. When the wall is flattened it catches fish, shrimps and lobsters.
  3. is formed by a bamboo stick which has a string cord and a wire which are attached to the highest edge. On the other edge there is a hook with fresh bait.
  4. Atarraya. - is a net, that when it is thrown, has a circular shape and when it is pulled back in it has a cone shape, which is used to catch shrimps and fish.
  5. Cordel o linea de mano.- is very common along the Ecuadorian coast and is composed of a wool string or synthetic fiber. It has 1 to 3 hooks and a weigh. It is used to catch fish like robalo, bass, catfish, mojarras, roncadoras, etc.
  6. Red estacada. -several layers of net are joined and it is attached by two edges with 2 sticks, the lower line is held by the use of small sticks of mangrove, the higher line uses a line of floats that go up when the tide is in. The fish are then collected when the tide is out.
  7. Trap of jaibas. - is formed by an iron ring which is sewed to the malla de enmalle where the bait is hidden. It has a float.
