Puerto El Morro is one of the rural areas that belongs
to Guayaquil. This small location has kept the secret
of having enormous natural attractions that most “guayaquileños”
ignore, for example, an extended mangrove forest and
its birds, and not less important: the Bottle Nosed
Dolphins. Add to this the different experiences you
can live on this area, since from these mangroves most
of the crab, shells, oysters and others are taken to
Guayaquil. Come and get to know a new destination kept
as a secret for such a long time and discover “Guayaquil´s
Natural Secret”.
Since September 2003 the “Ecoclub Los Delfines”
(The Dolphins Ecological Club), which is a non profit
organization, has been creating awareness about the
importance of our environment, caring of the natural
resources in the area of Puerto El Morro in Guayas,
and promoting sustainable ecotourism.
Nowadays their work is based on an annual plan of activities
and every three months there are some meetings with
local people and institutions who want to help with
training and social environmental actions which benefit
children, young people and inhabitants of Puerto El Morro.
In March 2006, the huts where the “Centro de
Interpretación Ambiental” (Centre of Environmental
Interpretation) works were finished, including the Restaurant
for Tourists and the Rustic Pier which is the jetty
landing for passengers. This construction was made based
on the project “Formación de Líderes
Comunitarios en Ecoturismo y Gestión Ambiental
Local” (Formation of Community leaders in Ecological
tourism and Local Environmental Issues), encouraged
by the Fundación Natura-Guayaquil (Foundation
Natural-Guayaquil) and with the support of the local
committees such as Junta Parroquial El Morro (Parish
Council El Morro), Comité de Desarrollo (Development
Committee), Asociación de Pescadores (Association
of Fishermen) and institutions like Marina Mercante
(Merchant Marine), Capitanía del Puerto de Guayaquil
(Captaincy of the Port of Guayaquil), Dirección
de Turismo y Medio Ambiente del Municipio de Guayaquil
(Direction of Tourism and Environment of the City Hall
of Guayaquil), and Cámara de Turismo de General
Villamil-Playas (Camera of Tourism of General Villamil
– Playas).
During its activities, this centre has established
cooperation links with local schools, universities of
Guayaquil, and other provinces, ONGs (Non Governmental
Organizations), Fundación Ecoclubs (Foundation
Ecoclubs), Programa de Recursos Costeros (Coastal Resources
Program), Subsecretaría de Turismo (Sub secretary
of Tourism), hoteliers and tourism operators, and the
press and media who have contributed to promote this
area helping to improve our work.
